Rossville – Miss Hazel P. Williams, 94, of Crestview Drive, Rossville, died Monday in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She was a telephone operator in Greencastle for a short time, then moved to Indianapolis where she was a secretary for American United Insurance Company. In 1946, she moved to Chicago and lived there until moving to Winter Haven, Fla in 1967. She came to Rossville in September. Active in Altrusa, a service organization for business and professional women, since becoming a charter member of Altrusa Club of Indianapolis in 1919, she received the Eleanor Roosevelt medal at the Altrusa International Convention in Boston in July 1985. The award is the greatest honor that Altrusa International bestows on its members. In 1946 she was named executive director for Altrusa International in Chicago. Miss Williams also was a member of the Altrusa Club in Winter Haven, Fla. Born March 14, 1891 in Putnam County she graduated from Greencastle HS and attended business college in Indianapolis. She moved to Winter Haven, Fla following her retirement in 1967 and there she founded and was a practitioner of Winter Park Church of Religious Science. Miss Hazel P. Williams, 94, Rossville, passed away Monday morning at Home Hospital, Lafayette. Born March 14, 1891 at Fern in Madison Township, Putnam County, she was the daughter of Jesse and Eva R. (Burnett) Williams. Miss Williams was graduated from Greencastle HS and attended business college in Indianapolis. She worked a short time as a telephone operator in Greencastle before moving to Indianapolis to work as a secretary for American United Insurance Co. In 1946, she moved to Chicago where she was named executive director of Altrusa International, a service organization for business and professional women. She held that position until her retirement in 1967. Miss Williams moved to Winter Park, Fla following retirement. There she became a founding member and practitioner of Winter Park Church of Religions Sciences. She was a member of the Altrusa Club of Winter Park and charter member of the Altrusa Club of Indianapolis, joining in 1919. In July 1985, Miss Williams received the Eleanor Roosevelt Medal, the highest honor Altrusa International can bestow upon one of its members. She received the award at the club’s international convention in Buston. She moved from Winter Park in Sept 1985 to make her home with a niece, Mrs. Bud (Maxine) Smith in Rossville. Besides Mrs. Smith other survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Gene (Virginia) Harlan, Indianapolis and Mrs. Clarence (Loretta) Cope, Phoenix, Ariz; two nephews, Don Williams, Tamarac, Fla and CR Williams, Lafayette; three great nieces, six great nephews and several great great nieces and nephews. Miss Williams was the last survivor of a family of 15 children. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle with Dr. C. Thomas Steiner officiating. Burial will be in Brock Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. – kbz
