WILLIAMS, Bert - Putnam

Bert Williams, aged 19 was instantly killed at 10:45 o’clock Saturday morning in an accident at the Indiana & Ohio Stone quarries just west of town. Williams was run over by a dinky engine and his body cut in two just above the hips. His body was viewed by Coroner Gillespie and taken to a local undertaking establishment where it was prepared for burial.  The accident occurred just west of the stone crusher.  Williams, who had been working in the quarries for several weeks as a mule driver had just Saturday morning begun work as a brakeman on the dinky train which hauls stone to the crusher. The engine was backing into the crusher, hauling a load of stone and Williams was riding on the running board of the dinky engine when the accident occurred. As the engine rounded a curve, Williams in some manner lost his footing and fell directly in front of the engine which passed over his body, cutting the body entirely in two.  Williams was a brother of Mrs. Harry Talbott and Mrs. Walter Cooper of Greencastle and a brother Billy Williams, also of Greencastle. The young man’s parents, both now dead, formerly lived in Putnamville.  Williams has worked in Terre Haute and recently worked in the EIteljorge Restaurant in this town. He has been making his home with James Blake. Funeral arrangements have not been made. – transcribed by kbz
