Obituary

John W. Whitted, departed this life March 30, 1930 at 11:30 o'clock PM. He was the son of Sylvester and Jane Whited. He was born in Knox Co., TN near Knoxville, Feb 11, 1856. When eight years of age he came with his parents to the brick Chapel neighborhood in Putnam Co., IN.

He was married to Mary Elizabeth Glover, July 31, 1877, to which union were born three children, Nellie, Clarence and Frank. The mother of these children died Oct. 27, 1886.

The deceased was married to Lydia E. Mahan, March 22, 1888, to which union there were born three children, Alva, Fern and Rena.

The deceased united with the Methodist Church of Morton under the pastorate of Rev. McManas at the age of sixteen. He later moved his membership to the Russellville Methodist Church in 1898, and at the time of his death he was affiliated with the Federated Church of Ressellville.

He is survived by his wife, Lydia, and Mrs. Nellie Cox, of Clinton Falls, Clarence Whitted, of Russellville, and Frank Whitted, of Newaygo, MI, children of the first marriage, and Alva Whitted, Mrs. Fern Carrington and Mrs. Rena Anderson, allof Russellville, Children by the second marriage. Three sisters, Mrs Lucy Phillips, of MIssissippi, Mrs. Cordy Bettis and Mrs. Addie Frank, of Illinois and two brothers, William, of Morton, and Finas of Greencastle, and twenty-three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

John was a loving husband, a dutiful father, a fathful member of his church and a respected citizen of the community.

Burial at Brick Chapel Church Cemetery.

Poem that followed the obituary:

When he was 8 years old he came with his parents to Brick Chapel, Putnam County. He married on july 31, 1877 to Mary Glover, three children to this marriage, Nellie, Clarence and Frank. She died on Oct. 27, 1886. On March 22, 1888 he married to Lydia E. Mahan, three children to this marriage, Alva, Fern and Rena. Survivors are his wife Lydia, children Mrs. Nellie Cox of Clinton Falls, Clarence Whitted of Russellville, Frank Whitted of Newaygo, MI, Alva Whitted, Fern Carrington and Rena Anderson all of Russellville, three sisters Mrs. Lucy Phillips of MS, Mrs. Corda Bettis and Mrs. Addie Frank of IL, two brothers William Whitted of Morton and Finas Whitted of Greencastle, 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Burial was in the Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Funeral services for John Whitted, aged Russellville man, who died at his home last night following an illness of several months will be held Tuesday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon at the Federated church at Russell-at the Federated church at Russell-ville cemetery. Mr Whitted was a life-long resident of Putnam county and is survived by the wife and five children. All of the children are married. (Correction- he was buried at Brick Chapel Cemetery.)

Funeral services for John Whitted age 74 years, who died at his home south of Russellville Sunday night following a stroke of paralysis, was this afternoon at 1 o'clock at his home with interment in Brick Chapel cemetery. The deceased was born near Knoxville, TN, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Whitted. he was united in marriage to Mary Glover, July 32, 1877, who died Oct. 27, 1886. He was later united in marriage to Lydia E. Mahan, March 22, 1888. Deceased was a member of the Methodist Church of Russellville. The survivors are the wife, Lydia; Mrs. Nellie Cox of Clinton Falls; Clarence Whitted of Russellville; Frank Whitted of Newaygo, Mich, children of the first marriage; and Alva Whitted and Mrs. Fern Carrington and Mrs. Rena Anderson, all of Russellville, children of the second marriage. He also leaves twenty-three grandchildren and eight grandchildren: three sisters and two brothers. The brothers are William Whitted of Morton and Finas Whited of Greencastle.
