WHITE, Arthur O. - Putnam

Sudden Death. Last Tuesday evening about 5 o'clock Mr. Arthur O. White, one of Greencastle's oldest and best known citizens, died very suddenly, at his late home, in this city. Deceased had been confined to the house by sickness for a week or so, but he was not seriously ill, and on Tuesday was up about the house and feeling better than usual.

A short time before his death he put on his coat and a pair of gloves, and started for the kitchen, saying to his wife he would go and do his evening work. Mrs. White told him the work was all done, and he sat down on a chair in the kitchen. Mrs. White passed on to the front part of the house and remained there a few minutes. Noticing that Mr. White did not follow, she returned to the kitchen and found him still on the chair, apparently cold in death. Assistance was summoned and an examination proved that the vital spark had indeed fled. Death resulted from apoplexy, and the indications are that it was painless and instantaneous. Mr. White was in his 74th year, and had been identified with the business interests of Greencastle for a half-century.

He was highly esteemed and popular with all who knew him. He was an enthusiast in bee culture and of his chiefest pleasures was in caring for and watching the work of these busy bodies. His death is sincerely mourned not only by the family, but also by a large circle of friends. The deceased leaves surviving children--Mrs. J. D. Allen and Edgar W. White, of this city; Mrs. J. E. Teague, of Chicago; Horace White or Port Angles, Wash.; Mrs. Herrlott and Charles E. White, of Indianapolis, and John D. White, of Seattle, Wash. The funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church, on Thursday afternoon, and was largely attended, Dr. Roth conducting the services.
