Portland – Superintendent of the Portland-Wayne Township Schools, Donald Steward Weller, 64, died at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Jay County Hospital. He died of a heart attack and had suffered one earlier around 4 p.m.
Mr. Weller was born in Putnam County and came to Portland in 1920 as basketball coach. Named high school principal in 1922, he became superintendent of schools in 1940 and held the post after the consolidation with Wayne Township. A member of the Portland Rotary Club, the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge at Groveland, Ind, Mr. Weller also belonged to the National Assn of School Superintendents, the Northeastern Indiana School Superintendents, Assn the Indiana School Men’s Club and the Indiana State Teachers Assn. He is survived by his wife, Mary Emma; two daughters, Mrs. John Hardy, Jr, Portland and Mrs. Alice Frakes, Narrows, Va; a brother, Arthur, Bainbridge and a sister in New Maysville, Ind. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Baird Funeral Home with the Rev. EG Bjork officiating and burial to be in Green Park Cemetery. – kbz
