New York – Author and antinuclear activist Mary Hays Weik is dead at 81. A former newspaperwoman and writer, Mrs. Weik spent most of the last 20 years speaking out against the dangers of nuclear power. She died Christmas Day at her home. Mrs. (note: pretty sure she never married and she was a Ms) Weik was a founder of the American Fellowship of World Citizens after World War II and later organized the Committee Against Radiological Hazards that worked to prevent scheduled construction of a nuclear power plant on the East River opposite midtown Manhattan. Her newsletter, Window on the World, published over the past 25 years, reported on little-known nuclear accidents and efforts of private citizens in numerous countries to stop atomic projects. Born in Greencastle, Ind, Weik worked as a newspaper reporter in Chicago after graduating from DePauw University. She came to New York as a staff writer for Street & Smith Publications after her first magazine short story was published.
