VERMILLION, John

Source: Greencastle Herald 3 February 1912 p 4

John Vermillion, son of Eld. Joel and Martha (Shaw) Vermillion was born in Clinton Township, Putnam County May 16, 1835 and died at his home near Belle Union, Ind on Jan 28, 1912, age 76 years 8 months and 12 days.  His death was a result of a stroke of paralysis coming unexpectedly upon him while about his usual morning duties last Tuesday.  Mr. Vermillion was truly one of Putnam County’s most energetic and successful pioneers, coming as from one of the best and most favorably known families of the county, he was widely known as well as high esteemed by all who knew him.  He was married to Julia A. Allee Oct 27, 1867. This this union were born 8 children, six of whom survive him and are as follows: Otho, Annette, Orval L, Emma, Louisa and Joel S., all living near the old homestead.  He is also survived by Reason Vermillion of Wichita Kansas a brother and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Runyan of Mt. Meridian and Sarah Jane Kemper of Bedford, Ia besides 7 grandchildren.  Religiously Mr. Vermillion had strong conviction and while he had made no public avowel of his feelings in this direction to his most intimate friends he had confided the secret impulses of his heart that he believed fully in Jesus as his only hope for glory and immortal life.  To his sister, Mr. Runyan soon after the death of his brother Henry he made known that for more than 40 years he had entertained a hope having  received a sweet peace in trusting his all to Jesus the sinner’s friend while sitting under the sound of the gospel as preached by Eld. Wm. Shields also that it would have been taken to the water immediately from the funeral of his brother and been buried with his Lord in baptism.  To his companion he often expressed his faith in God that he would finally deliver him from this present evil world and who shall doubt the truth of his faith.  Has it not been said by good authority that “they put their trust in God shall mount up with wings as eagles?”   ---transcribed by kbz
