THORNTON, Charles - Putnam

Charles E. Thornton died last night at his home, 1216 Broadway of Bright’s disease. For the last week death was feared by his family and friends. He was conscious until a few minutes before the end. He was president of the Indiana Society for Savings with which Mayor Bookwalter was connected for several years was a leading member of the Third Christian Church, member of the Commercial and Marion Clubs and of No 56 K of P Lodge. He was also a trustee of Butler College.  He was born at Bainbridge, Putnam County in 1855. His father, Daniel T. Thornton was a well-to-do-farmer who died in Indianapolis about 8 years ago.  He came to Indianapolis when a young man to attend Northwestern University, now Butler College where he was graduated. He married Miss Evan M. Huston of Irvington. His first business enterprise in Indianapolis was in a hardware store in Ft. Wayne Avenue in partnership with Milton Darnall.  Later he was a pension attorney and real estate and insurance man. In 1893 he and Mayor Bookwalter organized the Indiana Society of Savings. His wife and two children survive, Margaret age 13 and Cornelia age 9. His brother Lafayette lives in Indianapolis. The Butler College directors have been called to meet Monday at 11 o’clock at the Bowen-Merrill Company’s offices to take action on the death of Mr. Thornton. The Knights of Pythias Lodge of which Mr. Thornton was a member will meet at 1:30 Monday afternoon and attend the funeral in a body. The services will be held at 2 o’clock at the Third Christian Church. The lodge will have charge of the burial at Crown Hill. President Butler of Butler College referred feelingly at Chapel exercises this morning to the death of Mr. Thornton.
