James L. Thompson was born near Portland Mills, January 3, 1847. Died December 29, 1915, aged sixty-nine years, eleven months, and twenty six days. He was married to Lucinda Gardner February 8, 1866. To this union was born five girls, two of whom preceded their father to that bourne from which no traveler returns, thus leaving the widow three daughters namely, Effie M. Rice, Cora B. Hazlett and Grace Cox, sixteen grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Catherine E. Faulkner, and other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He united with the Christian Church at Portland Mills in the year 1868 and always retained his membership there.
Uncle Jim was an honest upright and industrious citizen, always willing to lend a helping hand in sickness or death or upon any occasion when help was needed. He has fought the fight and finished the course and has gone to appear before a just and righteous Judge who doeth all things well.
