SUTHERLIN, Talbott

Talbott Sutherlin, son of Thomas and Margaret (Britton) Sutherlin was born near Cairo in Putnam County, Ind April 25, 1845 and passed through death into the new birth Feb 8, 1912 in his 67th year.  He was united in marriage with Nancy J. LaFollette Jan 22, 1868. 10 children came to bless their home of which six are yet living.  He and his wife united with the Christian Church in June 1895.  His father died when Talbott was 16 years of age after which he made his own way in life.  His early ambition was for an education and he attended the old academy at Ladoga in the years 1867-8.  He was commonly called by relatives and friends was a man of exceptional simplicity and force of character and is known and respect near and far for his sterling worth and his patient helpfulness to all whom he met in his many associations.  To know him was a blessing to be numbered among his friends was to become a better man because of his influence.  His mind was remarkably free from petty jealousies and ambitions of life.  He was a man of whom, those who did not remember their own father would say, “I wish I had a Father like Tol Sutherlin,” and those who memory of father and mother was dear to them would say, “I am glad that my father was like him.” He had been in poor health for three years and through it all ever when his disease was making the final inroads of his strength his habitual patience did not fail.  No word of complaint or impatience mars the recollection of him in the home circle.  Habitually thoughtful of others, in his last illness he yet thought more of the comfort of others than of himself.  He passed away from this life, secure in his faith in Christ and in peaceful submission to the summons to enter the Heavenly Home.  On Sunday morning before his death on Thursday, hi sister, Mrs. Emma Dodd, read to him the 14th chapter of John’s Gospel and offered prayer; after this he called around his bed the members of the family and told them of his last wish for them. “That they be good and lead peaceful lives among themselves,” and closed with the words, “I have done the best I could. I have no complaints to make!”
