OBITUARY
"There is no flock, however watched and tended,
But one dead lambs is there;
There is no fireside, howe'er defended,
But has one vacant chair."

Mattie E. Sutherlin, daughter of Joseph and Eliza Brothers, was born Oct. 9, 1867 in Putnam county, and passed away at the Eli Lilly Clinic in Indianapolis on Nov. 19, 1945, aged 78 years. She was one of a family of six children-five girls and a boy. The parents, two sisters, Emma Scott and Betty Ashby, and her brother, Landy Brothers, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Laura Fosher of Fincastle and Mrs. Ethel Littell of Portland, Oregon.

In 1888, she united with the Union Chapel Methodist church west of Morton, and in the same year, Sept. 9, 1888, she was united in marriage to Richard C. Sutherlin. Two sons, Lee and Earl, came to bless this home. Her life centered around her husband, her home and her boys, but not selfishly, for she found' abundant time for service to neighbors and friends. Many were the ......for this needful duty and many were the generous gifts given quietly and without pomp and pride where they were most needed.

In a recent letter from a close friend of the family was this paragraph "It was too bad she
had to go when both of the boys were so far away, but of course they were here when she could enjoy them which was really important. Her death will be awfully hard on Mr. Sutherlin for she was his chief interest. But they have reared two fine boys and have two as fine daughters-in-law-as one..... loved one sleep.

Funeral services were held at the Federated church Saturday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. L. L. Bickett. Mrs. Rossie Spencer, Mrs. Edna Scribner and Mrs. Fred Belles sang "The Sweet Bye and Bye," and "Abide With Me," accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Floyd Gardner.

The many beautiful floral offerings were carried by relatives and old neighbors. Pall bearers were: Dennis Clodfeter, Cline Spencer, Herman Sutherlin, Charles Brothers, Hubert McGaughey and Charles Yarbrough.

Burial was in Hebron Cemetery.
