Died on the “dread field of carnage – slain by the unerring bullet of the relentless foe, at the fatal contest at Thomson’s Station, Tennessee, Mr. John Steele, Orderly Sgt of Company E, 33d Regiment Indiana Volunteers. Never died a braver or more patriotic and pure-minded boy than he, whose untimely loss so many friends are now mourning. But while we mourn we rejoice that he died so nobly battling in such a glorious cause.  Heaven will be the future home of all such noble, valiant martyrs for their country.  In that “Better Land,” there are no bloody, cruel wars to slay our brothers, fathers and friend. There all is peace, and joy, and harmony.  Greencastle, April 29, 1863 – Frank
