John H. SPENCER, age 69, whose critical illness was mentioned last week, died in Union Hospital, Terre Haute at 3 o'clock Sunday morning. Mr. Spencer was born in Putnam County. He taught school a few years and served as trustee of Greene Township. He was in the store business at Milligan and Guion. He moved from Guion to Rockville. He became interested in county politics and was long very active as a Republican. He served two terms as postmaster in Rockville and several terms as deputy in various county offices and thus became widely known in local political circles. Mr. Spencer was a member of the ME Church and the Masonic and IOOF [Independent Order of Odd Fellows] Lodges in both of which he filled the highest offices. In Sept, 1887, he married Miss Mary E. SMILEY who died April 26, 1924. A daughter, Jessie died when 7 years old. Funeral services were held in the ME Church, Wednesday forenoon at 10 the body lying in state there for an hour. Rev. Clyde H. Lininger officiated. Burial in Rockville Cemetery. Rockville Republican. Mrs. CW Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Spencer and Frank Ginn attended the funeral. - transcribed by kbz
