Thorntown- Harold S. Spencer, 78 of Thorntown died today at 4:30 a.m. in Witham Hospital at Lebanon. He had been in failing health since April and in the hospital one month. Born at Russellville, he moved to Thorntown in 1919. Mr. Spencer married in 1919 to Belle Mater at Thorntown who died in 1933. He married Mildred Barker in 1937 who survives. He was a graduate of Russellville HS, attended Central Normal at Danville and graduated from Indiana University.  Mr. Spencer taught school at New Richmond and Russellville.  He served in the Army during WWI and was discharged as captain in 1919. In 1919 he became a partner in the Mater & Spencer Hardware Store at Thorntown. He retired in 1959. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and held many offices there. He was a director and vice president of the Home National Bank at Thorntown.  He was a past master and 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Thorntown Order of Eastern Star, member and past president of the Thorntown Lion’s Club, and was serving his 13th year as councilman of Boone County. He was also a member of the Veterans of WWI, VFW, American Legion & 40 & 8. Mr. Spencer was a charter member of the Boone County barracks 525 of Veterans of WWI and served as Barracks Commander two years, district commander in 1969 and state commander in 1969 and 1970. Surviving with the widow is one son Robert L. of Thorntown. - transcribed by kbz
