Greencastle’s people were greatly shocked on Thursday Feb 2, 1893, by the death of Mrs. Frances Olivia Southard, wife of D.L. Southard Esq. But few of our citizens knew that she was sick and the few who did know had no apprehension of fatal results. On Friday evening previous to her demise, Mrs. Southard caught a severe cold; the usual family remedies were administered but the desired benefit did not result; on Sunday a physician was called, everything possible to medical skill was done but the patient grew steadily worse until Thursday afternoon when the sufferer passed to the beyond, a victim of that insidious disease, pneumonia.
Mrs. Southard was born Oct 30, 1832 and died Feb 2, 1893, aged 61 years. She was married to Mr. D.. Southard in this city in 1863; deceased was the mother of two children – Mrs. Frances Olivia Fletcher of Indianapolis and Miss Julia Bantz Southard – the husband and children, together with a large circle of relatives and a host of friends mourn the loss of one very dear to them. The deceased was a womanly woman - bright, cheerful, intelligent; an ornament to society and a blessing in the home; kind of heart and of gentle mien; winsome and glad with those who rejoiced tenderly sympathetic and tireless in giving comfort to those who mourned; a true and loving wife, a fond, indulgent mother, ever watchful of the welfare of husband and children - such were her marked characteristics. The loss to those nearest and dearest to her is irreparable this side of the river, but let us all hope that in the great beyond the broken ties of love will be reunited for all eternity.
The funeral will take place from the family residence, on East Seminary Street, Monday afternoon, without information is received in the meantime making it necessary to alter the arrangements. --- kbz
