Word was received here on Sunday morning that Edwin C. Smythe former citizen died shortly before midnight at the home of his son, Prof. William Smythe in Greencastle. The body was taken to Harrisburg, Illinois on Monday and interred by the side of his youngest son. Mr. Smythe was born in Putnam County near Fillmore about 70 years ago. He was a sawyer by trade and worked at various points in Indiana and Illinois. For many years he worked for the late AJ Wolfe and went from here to Lebanon where he worked for Jacob Wilcox until he was disabled by a paralytic stroke. He then lived with his brother, near Fincastle and laterly with his son in Greencastle. He was twice married. His second wife and four children survive: WE Smythe of Greencastle, Mrs. Grace Baker and Mrs. Etta Jones of Harrisburg, Illinois and Mrs. Elsie Joiner of Chicago. He was an active member of the ME Church and took great interest in Sunday School work as long as his health would permit. He was a member of Waveland Lodge IOOF.
