John L. Smith, 76. Cloverdale, died Wednesday Aug 24, 1994 at the Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle. Born on Aug 17, 1918, at Putnamville, he was the son of Earnest C. and Mary Edith Sellers Smith, both deceased. He married Kathleen Kendall, who survives. He worked as a security officer Lieber State Recreation Area and as a farmer. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1936 and attended Purdue University. He was a member of American Legion Post #281 at Cloverdale. Other survivors, besides his wife, include three daughters, Debra Kay Dorsett, Cloverdale; Karen Sue Zaring, Reelsville, and Judith Ann Smith, Brownsburg; one son, John Michael Smith, Mooresville; three sisters, Elizabeth Jones, Connersville; Mildred Davis, California and Mary Heeke of Putnamville; one brother, Bud Smith, Rossville and nine grandchildren. An infant son, John K. Smith and one brother, William Earnest Smith preceded him in death. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home in Cloverdale. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Pat Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Putnamville Cemetery with military graveside services to be conducted. – kbz
