Claude Carl Smith, 61, prominent local cement and brick contractor, died suddenly while at work on the Harve Blaydes farm near here on Wednesday, March 11. Death is believed to have been caused by heart failure. Mr. Smith and his eldest son Edward were engaged in building fence on the Blaydes farm when he suddenly became ill. He died before a physician could reach him. He had been in the cement and brick business here many years. Mr. Smith was born near Barnard May 18, 1880, the son of Edward and Fannie Moore Smith. He was married at Danville, Illinois, July 28, 1903, to Nerva Elsberry who survives. Besides the widow other survivors are nine daughters; Mrs. Jefferson Crawley of Roachdale, Mrs. Russell Cross of Ladoga, Mrs. Homer Tobin of Anderson, Mrs. Harold Henderson of Crawfordsville, Miss Evelyn Smith of Anderson and Misses Pauline, Marjorie, Wanda and Marcia Ann Smith all of this place, four sons; Edward, Charles and Billy Smith of Roachdale and Pvt. Ward T. Smith of Ft.
