SLAVENS, Stella McClain - Putnam

Stella May SLAVENS, 79, widow of Spanish-American and WWI Veteran, Geirge Slavens, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday Jan 17 in the home of Waneta Wiatt, north of Waveland. She had been failing in health for several years. Mrs. Slavens was born in Parke County Aug 11, 1878, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David McClain. She married Mr. Slavens in Va, Dec 22, 1915. He preceded her in death Feb 28 1952.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, OES and American Legion Aux at Waveland; Spanish-American Aux in Greencastle. She was a member of the Women's Department Club and at one time had served as state Pres of the Auxiliary of the Rural Letter Carriers Association. For many years, Mrs. Slavens was director of the Red cross in Brown Twp. She also taught the teenage class for several years at the Christian Church, was pianist and worked with the young people in their programs and with the youth meetings.

She studied music for four years at the Indianapaolis Conservatory of Music and taught for several years. Survivors include several cousins, a stepdaughter, Mrs. Thelma Thomas of Indianapolis and a grandson of Mr. Slavens, Harold Thomas of Indianapolis. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Noble Reeves Funeral Home, New Market. Mrs. Zelma Spencer played selections on the chapel organ. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cem, Parke Co. Pall bearers were Lowell, Donn and Ray Spencer; Bob Myers, Dale McClain and Isaac Wiatt. - typed by kbz
