George P. Shoptaugh, age 80, prominent Lincoln Township resident and formerly in the hardware business in Maryville, died at 8:40 o’clock this morning at his home in Elmo. He had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Shoptaugh had lived in the county over 50 years. He lived in Maryville from 1896 to 1906 and since had made Elmo his home. Mr. Shoptaugh was formerly deputy county clerk and was county tax collector under the old law. The hardware store of Hudson Brothers in Maryville, located where the Woolworth store now is, was bought by Mr. Shoptaugh and Henry Bucker, the firm title being Shoptaugh & Bucker. Later, Mr. Shoptaugh was in business with John Thornhill. Mr. Shoptaugh was born at Putnamville, Ind April 4, 1855. In the fall of 1882 he went to Clearmont. He moved form Maryville to Elmo in 1906. He was elected president of the Farmers & Merchants Bank at Elmo in 1899. Mr. Shoptaugh was prominent in community and church affairs. During the World War when the national selective conscription law went into effect in June, 1917, Mr. Shoptaugh was appointed by the Nodaway county registration board as head of the registration of men for the first draft in Lincoln township. He also took active part in the Liberty loan drives. Mr. Shoptaugh had been a life-long member of the Christian Church and had been superintendent of the Sunday School over 40 years. He was married to Miss Ella Hundley. Surviving are the widow; three brothers, DA Shoptaugh, Putnamville, Ind; Will Shoptaugh, St. Louis, Mo; JA Shoptaugh, Indianapolis, Ind; three sisters, Mrs. JN Alee, Cloverdale, Indiana; Mrs. Rena Dougan, living in Illinois and Mrs. Joseph Flinn, Chanute, Kan.
