SHIELDS, James

Source: Greencastle Banner 3 July 1879 p 2 (died 30 Sept 1879)

The venerable James Shields died at the residence of his son-in-law, WH Buffington in this city, Tuesday morning at 8 o’clock aged 91 years. For several years he had been in feeble health and at last succumbed to the infirmities of old age, retaining his mental faculties, however to the last. Mr. Shields was a native of Greene County, Kentucky.  He removed with his parents to Orange County, this state while yet a young man.  In 1819 he married Miss Celia Fisher. He removed to Greencastle in 1845 and resided here since that time, being engaged at various times in shoemaking, dealing in lumber and the last business he did, selling groceries. Since early manhood he has been a member of the Presbyterian Church and was always active in good works. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, but we have been unable to obtain the particulars of his service. The remains were interred in the Old Cemetery yesterday, Rev. GG Mitchell officiating.  – kbz
