Oscar Allen Shepard, died Thursday morning, June 29, 1939, at his home in Roachdale. He was born September 4, 1869, the son of James P. and Margaret Weller Shepard, on the farm near Groveland, Indiana. He was united with the Groveland Presbyterian church in early manhood and later transferred his membership to the Roachdale church. Mr. Shepard attended Indiana State Teacher's College for one year and completed his college training at Franklin college. On February 14, 1894, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Ann Timmons and all their married life has been spent in Roachdale. Two children survive to revere the memory of their father. They are Wendell of Kansas City, Missouri, and Lucile of Chicago. Thirty-three of his most active years were spent in the mercantile business in Roachdale. He was first associated with Mr. Clark Sutherlin in the dry goods business and later owned and operated a men's clothing store from which he retired in 1927 because of ill health. He suffered a paralytic stroke March 15, 1927, but only the last month has he been confined to his bed. He was president of the Roachdale Bank for thirty-two years and during that time he saw it rise from a small organization to the sound institution that it is today. He was a charter member and first Master of the Roachdale Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning by Rev. Harold Quigley, pastor of the Roachdale Presbyterian church. Internment was in the Roachdale cemetery --- thanks so much to Marilyn Walker for donating her wonderful Roachdale Times obituary file for use on this site.
