At the residence of Mrs. Julia A. Boyd in Bainbridge, Indiana on Wed morning, the 28th ult at half past 7 o’clock, Mr. Lewis Shell, aged 70 years died. This worth citizen and exemplary Christian, one of the pioneers of Putnam Cunty was born in Montgomery County, Virginia Sept 14, 1796.  In 1802 he came with his parents to Knox County, East Tennessee where the family took up their residence near Knoxville.  In 1814 he entered the military service with the volunteers called out for the defense of Mobile. At the return of peace he was discharged and resumed the labors of the farm.  He was married March 18, 1818 and united with the Presbyterian Church in October 1825.  In November 1828, he removed to Putnam County and settled on a farm near Bainbridge where he resided till his decease.  Having been elected and ordained a ruling Elder in the Poplar Spring Presbyterian Church now the Bainbridge Presbyterian Church, he held this office till the time of his death, discharging its duties with great fidelity and zeal.  As a true patriot, a friend of morality and religion, as an advocate of temperance and an earnest and successful laborer in sabbath school instruction he will long be remembered by the people of Bainbridge and its vicinity.  His useful life is now closed and he has gone to his grave ripe in years and Christian experience.  May his pious teachings and example long continue in the memory of his surrounding friends and relatives
