Putnam County lost one of her most worthy young men with the death of Edward P. Sheets on Dec 28 last. The funeral services, held at the family homestead south of Greencastle were attended by a large number of relatives and friends who joined with the bereaved family in mourning the untimely death of one whose life had earned for him the respect of all who knew him. A beautiful solo was rendered by Miss Ridpath and Dr. Gobin of DPU spoke eloquently of the Christian’s hope beyond. In spite of the cole weather a great many followed the remains to their last resting place in Forest Hill Cemetery. Mr. Sheets was an example of a man without a single vice, and his every day life was one of singular purity. Beginning life with an inheritance of physical weakness but unusual mental strength and extraordinary will power, his career was a continual triumph over adverse circumstances. His early education was secured in the common schools after which he completed his studies at DePauw being the first graduate of the DPU Normal School.  After several  years devoted to teaching in the schools of Indiana and Florida, he was compelled to give up his profession on account of ill health. Since that time he had been an extensive traveler and his retentive memory and natural refinement of thought and expression made him a delightful companion. The last year of his life was spent at the homestead with his sister Hattie in caring for his aged mother to whom he was devoted. He was a consistent Christian, being a member of the Locust Street ME Church – CGB
