The funeral obsequies of Miss Nannie Sellers were
held yesterday, according to announcement, at her late home, corner of Indiana
and Berry Streets. There was quite a
large number of sympathizing friends in attendance, many of whom brought floral
offerings as testimonials of respect for the deceased young lady and of
condolence with the sorrowing family. A quartet, consisting of Mrs. Louis
Steeg, Miss Grace White and Messrs Harry Graham and Harry Moore sang Asleep in
Jesus; Gathering Home and Rock of Ages. Rev. Charles Crooke conducted the
services, reading selections from the Sacred Word, which was followed by a
brief discourse on the lessons drawn from it. An obituary reviewing the life of
the deceased was submitted by Howard Briggs, who is a near neighbor of the
bereaved family and his tribute to her many excellent qualities of head and
heart is attested by all who knew her.
The following named ladies acted as pallbearers: Misses Anna Ballard;
Nellie Adams; Cora Thomas; Dora Besser; Alice Paxton and Mrs. Della Craig. The
remains were conveyed to the Boone Cemetery near Hamrick’s station for
interment. They were followed to their last resting place by an unusually large
cortege and were met at the cemetery by many friends of the family from that
vicinity – kbz
In Memoriam – Nannie Sellers,
born in Warren Township, Putnam County, Indiana died in Greencastle Nov 9, 1897
aged 21 years and 27 days. Early in life she manifested a reverence for divine
truth which grew with her growth and strengthened with her strength. On the 26th
day of August 1894 she made a profession of her faith by uniting with Mt. Olive
M.E. Church and ever afterward lived in consistent Christian life. Both by her
faith and daily walk she exemplified the teachings of her Savior. The vain
amusements of the world, which please for the moment only while they bring no
lasting returns of mental or moral growth, had no charm for the young convert
who thus gave proof to her companions that there was a reality in the religion
of which she had made a public profession. She looked upon music as an
auxiliary to the good, the true and the beautiful in life, and after completing
her common school education and removing to this city in the spring of 1793
(sic 1893) she took lessons upon the pianoforte, her instructors being Mrs. Fida Lester
and Miss Jennie Bryan. She pursued her musical studies with assiduity until the
fall of that year when an attack of typhoid fever, lasting ten weeks,
interfered with their further prosecution. Miss Sellers was also a vocalist and
had her voice been trained by the masters of the divine art would have entitled
her to high rank among the queens of song. As it was, her sweet singing served
as an inspiration to all who heard it. In the practical affairs of life –
perhaps I should say the battle of life – Miss Sellers also sought to at well
her part. She resolved to fit herself
for some useful avocation and with that subject in view she entered the DePauw
commercial school in the spring of 1897.
Here she mastered bookkeeping, receiving her diploma along with the
commendation of her instructor, Prof. Horn for studiousness and proficiency.
Her penmanship also exhibited high conception and faultless execution. But it was in the home circle that her
highest virtues shone resplendent. During her last peculiarly sad and fatal
illness she bore her sufferings with Christian fortitude and resignation. She
continued to grow worse till Tuesday night. Nov 9 when at a few minutes of 9
her spirit took its flight to the sweet fields of Eden. It is the united
testimony of all who knew the consistent Christian, the dutiful daughter, the
affectionate sister and devoted friend and neighbor, that she was the undying
affection by deserving it. After life’s fitful fever she sleeps well.
