Died in this city Thursday
Feb 24, 1881, CJ Scott, aged 55 years and 3 months. Funeral on Sunday, Feb 27
at 2 o’clock p.m. Services at Christian
Church by Elder OP Badger, assisted by Rev. HA Gobin. Knight Templar service at
the grave. The above notice, issued on
Friday last, chronicled a sad loss, not only to the family and friends of the
deceased but to the city at large. CJ Scott was a generous, good-hearted
citizen; an upright, honest, attentive and enterprising business man; a loving,
indulgent and devoted husband and father.
As above noted, the funeral took place from the Christian Church last
Sunday afternoon. Notwithstanding the storm of rain and snow, the edifice was
filled with those who came to pay the last sad tribute of respect to all that
was mortal of the man they esteemed and many were turned away, failing to gain
standing room in the church. The remains were buried in Forest Hill Cemetery
with Knights Templar honors part of the ritual being pronounced at the church
and the remainder at the grave, there being a large delegation of Master Masons
and Knights Templar in attendance. Below we give a brief outline of the life of
the deceased as read by Elder Badger at the funeral: Cyrus Jacob Scott was
bornin the county of Washington, Ind near Salem on the 26th day of November
1825. His parents died when he was only
six years old. Brother Scott was married on the 1st day of January
1851 to Miss Rachel Kelley at the town of Gosport, he being at that time in his
26th year. The marriage rites
were conducted by Elder PM Blankenship.
In the year 1859 Brother Scott engaged in the business of hotel-keeping in
which business he spent most of his life. In 1864 he removed to Indianapolis
and remained there some two years and in 1866 he again settled in the town of
Gosport where he remained until 1871 at which time he came to this city and has
been in our midst ever since, until death has removed him – calling him from
labor to rest. On the evening of the 24th of February he calmly fell
asleep in Jesus, at the age of 55 years, 2 months and 28 days. Thus did the sun
of day go down with him at but little past high noon. Brother and sister Scott
have raised two sons, Charley and James, both of whom, we may fondly flatter
ourselves, will follow in the footsteps of a devoted father. Brother Scott has
been a humble disciple of the Redeemer since the year 1848 or ’49 some two years
prior to his marriage to Sister Scott and was buried with Christ in Baptism by
the same faithful servant of the Lord by
whom his marital vow was administered. Brother Scott was a man of benevolent
impulses, kind and obliging. As a
husband he was faithful and devoted; as a father he was affectionate; as a
Christian, consistent and trusty; as a citizen he was universally respected and
if he had an enemy it is not known to us or to his most intimate friends. He
was a member of two bodies – Odd Fellows and Free and Accepted Masons standing
high in both and the evidences of the esteem in which he was held by the latter
is fully attested in the services of this hour. And we are authorized to say he
was held in quite as high esteem in the former as in the latter. His manly form
will no longer be seen on our streets. Nor will he any more respond to the call
of God summoning him from refreshment to labor for his labor is now done. - kbz
