RICE, Ephaniah M. Thompson - Putnam

One of the saddest deaths for a long time occurred on Tuesday. Mrs. Effie Rice, who lived in the Copus property, east of town has been sick with measles and her whole family was sick at the same time. She recovered in a measure from this disease and was endeavoring to care for her sick children when she was stricken with pneumonia, which terminated fatally. There were 7 sick in the house at the time of her death, two in a very serious condition, while an older daughter is very sick with measles at the home of John Webb. The older boys are hard workers but have been unfortunate in business matters, and the family is in limited circumstances. A liberal donation was taken up on Wednesday and a nurse employed. The body of Mrs. Rice was taken to Clinton Falls for burial on Wednesday. On account of the contagious nature of the disease and the sickness in the family, no funeral service was held. She was born near Clinton Falls, Oct 8, 1866. Her husband, Elzephus Rice, died about two years ago. Mrs. Col Hazlett is a sister. The children at home are: Nellie, James, John, Charles, Leona, Lucille, Leon and Jessie. One son is in the west.

Mrs. Effie RICE died at her home northeast of here Tuesday evening. Her death was due to pneumonia following an attack of measles and she had been ill about 3 weeks. Mrs. Rice was the widow of Zeth Rice and is survived by 9 children, all living at home. They are: Nellie, James, John, Charles, Leona, Lucille, Leon and Jessie. There was a brief funeral service at the home this morning at 11 and the burial was at the Dunkard Cemetery near Clinton Falls.
