RATCLIFF, Lucy

Source: Greencastle Banner 27 May 1875 p 3

Many of t his community will be pained to learn that Mrs. Lucy LA Ratcliffe has passed away from the living.  Her health had been failing for several years, but until recently hopes were entertained of her recovery.  On the 7th of May she died peacefully at Braceville, Ohio.  Mrs. Ratcliffe was a classic graduate of Asbury University a member of the class of 73.  She attended but one year; and it was during that time that she became known in Greencastle not only as a woman of great talents but as one possessed of the nobles aims and purposes.  With a feeble constitution and having already the care of a family, she struggled through embarrassments that would have appalled a less courageous spirit. After graduation she devoted herself in professional teaching first at Russellville and then at Dayton.  At both of these places she was held in the highest esteem.  Whatever she has been known her absence has been a source of regret and now that the curtain has fallen upon her life, her aspirations, talents and virtues shine with a peculiar lustre.  Her disease was consumption. – kbz
