PRIEST, Joseph H.

Source: Garden City Kansas Herald Sat 10 Feb 1906 p 1

Joseph H. Priest was born in Marion County, Kentucky July 21, 1830 and died February 3, 1906 aged 76 years six months 14 days. In early manhood he moved with his parents to Putnam County, Indiana. In 1857 he united in marriage to Sallie Ragan. Five children were born to them, two of whom have preceded their father to their heaven-home. These were Mrs. Lizzie Allen who died in 1890 and Mrs. Carrie Allen who died in 1901. Mr. Priest lost the companion of his early life in 1869 and was united in marriage to Mary E. Rogers in December 1873. To this union were born three children, two of whom died in infancy. All of his life Mr. Priest was fond of agriculture and horticulture and kept in close communion with nature through these his favorite pursuits. He was a man of clean life and temperate habits, and to this cause owed his vigorous manhood up to an age when most men seemed  old.  He was an exemplary husband and father, a kind-hearted and hospitable neighbor. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the community in their loss. Funeral services were conducted from the home, Monday afternoon February 5, by Rev. Wm. Bullock of the Presbyterian church and interment was made in the Garden City cemetery.  Mr. Priest took an active interest in the business life of the city and in all his dealings he did unto others as he would have them do unto him. He made no open profession of religion but his daily life was all that was necessary to prove him a firm believer in a Supreme Being.  As a neighbor and friend one could desire no better.  Kindly in his nature and strong in his sympathies, he was ever ready to extend a helping hand to his friends and acquaintances. He never found it a hardship to bestow a favor, and he always had time for a pleasant word and a friendly handshake with those he met. The day of the funeral was very cold but a large number of friends attended the services at the house. The floral offerings were very beautiful. - kbz
