PLUMMER, Amos

Source: Westmoreland Kansas Recorder 25 June 1914 p 1

Amos Plummer, one of the early settlers of this county died very suddenly at his home in Onaga last Wednesday night. He was in his usual good health Wednesday and part of the day was playing croquet, as was his daily custom, but about 11 o’clock that night he awoke and called his wife and stated he was sick. A physician was immediately summoned but shortly after the arrival of the doctor he passed away.  It is thought death resulted from the bursting of a blood vessel.  Amos Plummer was born in Putnam County, Indiana oct 25, 1839 and died at Onaga, Kansas June 17, 1914. He was married to Rachel G. Siddens near Greencastle, Indiana on the 13th day of February 1862. To this union was born 8 children, 2 having died in infancy. Mr. Plummer came to Kansas in the fall of 1866 and settled on the old home farm at Moodyville, now occupied by his son, IB Plummer. His wife, Rachel G died June 16, 1887 in her 45th year, also two daughters preceded him, Mrs. Annie R. Rodgers who died Sept 24, 1905 and Mrs. Dora F. Walden, who died June 29, 1911. On Jan 30, 1890, Mr. Plummer was married to Mrs. Louisa Wilson of Soldier, Kansas.  In the spring of 1898 he moved to Onaga where he has made his home ever since.  He leaves to mourn his death his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Abbott of Moodyville and three sons, Isaac B. Plummer of Moodyville; William W Plummer of near Blaine and Joseph H. Plummer of Westmoreland; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Anderson and Mrs. Elizabeth Stone, both of Westmoreland; 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Short funeral services were held at the home in Onaga, Friday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Phillip Evans of the ME Church and the Onaga IOOF lodge.  The remains were then brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Abbott near Moodyville where services were held at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. HS Bower of Westmoreland and interment was made in the family lot at the Moodyville cemetery.  The Westmoreland IOOF Lodge No 252 of which he was a member of long standing, had charge of the burial services at the grave. The pall bearers were member of both Onaga and Westmoreland lodges. The service at Moodyville was largely attended and was one of the largest funeral ever held in the community. A choir, composed of Mrs. Walter Robson; Mrs. WJ Keyser, HF Kaump and Dr. GR Loofbourrow, furnished several selections.  Amos Plummer was whole-souled, kind hearted and unselfish. He had been associated with the social and business interests of this community for nearly 50 years and so far as known there are none but who bow the head in mute sympathy and join in the keener sorrow of the bereaved widow and children at his going away. Scarcely is it give to man in his walk of life to enjoy a free or fuller confidence, a more substantial friendship of the people of his home, than that bestowed upon Mr. Plummer. He lived a simple, unostentatious life, full of good deeds and charity for his fellowmen.  Mr. Plummer was a believer in Christianity and shortly after moving to Kansas united with the Christian Church. Among the out of town relatives and old friends of the family who were in attendance at the funeral were: AA Richards and wife of Orange, Calif; Albert Richards, Mrs. Nick Price, GW Townsend and wife, Mrs. MT Walden, SW Forrester and wife and Claude Walden and wife of Manhattan; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Walden of Paxico; Mrs. Charley Sommers; Miss Florence Anderson; Mr. Varner and family of Topeka; Elder WH Shumate, Harveyville; Robt.
