PERRY, John W.

Source: Greencastle Banner 6 Oct 1887 p 8

John W. Perry died at his home in Chariton, Iowa on the 21st of Sept of cancer of the stomach.  He was born in Putnamville Dec 7th 1836 and graduated from Asbury in the class of 1859.  He leaves a wife and two children, son and daughter. The Chariot Patriot had this notice of his death.  In the death of our friend, John W. Perry the community loses a valuable and upright citizen, the church a consistent member and his family an affectionate and devoted husband and father. It was the pleasure of the Patriot to know Mr. Perry long and intimately. The sad duty of this moment is done with a profound appreciation of his excellent life, a knowledge of his high purposes and a mournful recollection of his hopeful and manly struggles against adverse fortune. He was an educated and refined gentleman and unconsciously honest. Integrity with him was not a matter of circumstances or policy but was a part of his very nature.  He knew nothing of the technicalities of what may be fittingly termed legal honesty but made his word a sacred bond to be faithfully observed. In every relation of life he did his duty modestly.  His plan and direct nature needed no display. He lived his virtues every hour and to state the simple facts of his blameless and pure life is the highest eulogy that can be spoken over his grave.  The Masonic fraternity to which Mr. Perry belonged passed appropriate resulutions which were published. - kbz
