Goldie Patterson, aged 28, son of William Patterson of Limedale, was killed by the cars on the Monon west of town Saturday afternoon, the manner in which he met his death affording considerable mystery to his friends. He was run over by south bound gravel train No 211 at about 3 o’clock but whether or not this train is the one that caused his death is not known.  When the train reached a point about 200 yards south of the spoke factory Engineer Hurst saw a man lying on the track with his neck across the rail. The train was speeding along at a moderate rate and when the engineer reversed his engine it was too late to stop before reaching the body. The engine was then backed up and the crew found that the man’s body was horrible mutilated, besides the head being severed from the shoulders. The authorities were notified and the body was taken to the AB Hanna morgue where it was identified by friends of the deceased. How Patterson came to be lying on the track in such a manner is not known. The trainmen believe that he was dead when No 211 struck him but others hold to a different view. Patterson was a section man employed on the Vandalia. He had been ill for two days with the cramps of the stomach but was able to come to town Saturday.  Although he was a man who drank moderately, it is not known whether or not he had been drinking when he started home. The funeral was conducted at the home of his father Sunday afternoon, by Rev. Ray and interment occurred at Forest Hill. The coroner’s inquest will be held at that official’s office Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock. Patterson was a single man but leaves and aged father and mother and several brothers and sisters. - kbz
