OSBORN, Ruby

Died at the residence of Hon. Solomon Claypool, Indianapolis on the 15th inst at 6 o’clock p.m. Mrs. Ruby Osborn, aged 84 years 7 days. Mrs. Osborn was the surviving widow of the late John W. Osborn, the pioneer journalist of Terre Haute. She was born April 8, 1796 at Homer, Cortland County, New York where she was married to Mr. Osborn and whence they emigrated to Indiana and settled at Vincennes in 1818. Mr. Osborn published the Western Sun at Vincennes for a time. They came here (Terre Haute) in 1823 where Mr. Osborn established the Western Presbyterian, the first newspaper published in Terre Haute, the first number of which was issued on the 21st of July that year. He died in 1866, leaving Mrs. Osborn and four children who still survive. These are Mary C, wife of SB Gookins, Terre Haute; Bishop W. Osborn and Hannah, wife of Judge Claypool of Indianapolis and Alice, wife of Hon. LP Chapin, mayor of Greencastle - kbz
