Services for Gilbert E. Ogles, 95, Belle Union, former state official and longtime Republican activist will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale. Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. He died Tuesday. He was a Putnam County commissioner from 1980-84 at the time one of the oldest elected state officials in Indiana. Previous, he had been a Jefferson Twp trustee from 1923-27, making him at the time, the youngest elected state official in Indiana. He had been Putnam County Treasurer from 1929-31 and from 1937-41 Putnam County auditor. Mr. Ogles had been Putnam County Republican Chairman 32 years until 1964. He had been the first deputy to the secretary of state form 1945-49 and from 1951-53. In 1948, he was a Republican nominee for state auditor.  Mr. Ogles was a state senator for Putnam and Montgomery counties from 1961-63. He had been chief doorkeeper n the House and Senate for six terms and was a delegate to the Republican State Convention 50 years. In 1953 and 57 he received a citation for meritorious service award from Gov. George Craig and in 1960 awarded Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Harold Handley. He was a retired farmer and had owned and operated O-C Midway Drive-In Theatre 13 years. He also had owned and operated Greencastle Elevator several years.  He was the widower of Mabel L. Elmore Ogles. Survivors son Frank Ogles; one grandson.
