A good neighbor, a good man, a good citizen, a good husband and father has gone home. Joseph O'Neal, the subject of this sketch, was born in Shelby county, Kentucky, on the 28th day of April 1822. In the fall of the year 1834, his parents, Baley and Ruth O'Neal, moved from Kentucky to the state of Indiana and settled on a farm in Marion township, near Fillmore, in Putnam county, where Joseph H. was brought up to his majority. In 1841, he married Mahala Allen. The fruit of said marriage was two children, the eldest, a daughter, now Mrs. James R. Walton, of Fillmore, and the mother of six living and two dead children. The living are Arta, Lida, Alie, May, Albert, and Eva. The son, Baley T. O'Neal, with his family now reside in Brazil, and is the father of two children, namely Verna and Norma, aged respectively, 11 and 7 years. At 12:13 o'clock a. m. July 14, 1892 _____ [illegible word] a long and distressing ______[illegible word, possibly silence or scream], _______ [illegible word] from heart trouble. Mr. O'Neal passed quietly and peacefully away to that bourne from whence none return, leaving as survivors, his wife, Mahala, now in the 78th year of her age, and the eight grand children above named. Joseph H. O'Neal, better known in this community as "Uncle Jo," has lived in this vicinity ever since he was brought to this state by his parents and was well and favorably known to all. He was a good man, a good citizen, a good neighbor, and a good husband and father.

Contributor's notes: Parts of the obituary are difficult to read, and the names of the grandchildren don't exactly mesh with what I have in my record. That may be due to the quality of the source. For instance, the source looks like "Arta" but my records indicate this could be "Artie" or "Alma". Joseph ONEAL and his wife Mahala are buried at Fillmore Cemetery.
