James H. Newnam, 73 years old, wholesale dry goods salesman and resident of Indianapolis 50 years, died yesterday in a sanitarium at 2112 North Delaware Street after an illness of two years. Mr. Newnam came to Indianapolis in the early 880s as a salesman for the Murphy-Hibben Company, wholesale dry good dealers. The company later became Hibben Hollweg & Co. Until two years ago when Mr. Newnam was forced to retire because of illness, he had worked steadily in the employ of the company nearly half a century. Born in Putnam County near Fillmore Mr. Newnam lived there until he was a young man. He was a partner in a general store business at Fillmore several years. After selling his interests he went to Bloomington and opened another store there. From Bloomington he came to Indianapolis to enter the wholesale selling field. He was a Democrat and was active in politics. Before going to the sanitarium he lived at the Elks Club. Survivors are a brother, James M. Newnam of Coatsville and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Alspaugh and Mrs. WP Ledbetter both of Greencastle. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at Flanner & Buchanan mortuary.
