NEWKIRK, William

Source: Greencastle Herald 9 Dec 1911 p 1

Dr. JPD John received a telegram Saturday afternoon from Daytona, Florida announcing the death of William Newkirk, former president of the Board of Trustees of DePauw University, which occurred Saturday morning. The telegram stated that the body will be brought to Connersville, Ind, Mr. Newkirk’s former home for burial. The funeral services probably will be held at Connersville Tuesday. Mr. Newkirk was about 80 years old and is survived by a widow and two daughters.  Thursday a press dispatch in the state papers from Connersville stated that Mr. Newkirk had been the victim of an assault in Connersville Wednesday night.  The report was unfounded.  Dr. McConnell and several members of the DePauw faculty telegraphed to Connersville immediately upon reading of the report. Answers came that Mr. Newkirk was in Florida where he had gone for his health.  Mr. Newkirk gave DePauw University a large collection of valuable books some years ago. The collection is known as the Newkirk library. - kbz
