Mel Newhouse, son of J.E. Newhouse of this township, has not been heard of since Sept 27, 1893. On that day he was at Rochester, Ind intending to drive to a neighboring town to visit his sister. He never arrived at the sister's residence and the family fear that he has been killed and robbed, as he had considerable money in his possession. – kbz

Many of you will remember “Mell” Newhouse, who spent the winters two and three years ago with his father on Anderson Street.  I wrote him the past summer to come and take charge of my fruit farm as he was an expert in that line. Accordingly, he left Dodge City, Kan, Sept 2 intending to visit the Columbian exposition, his brother and sister in Fulton and Wabash Counties then come to Greencastle. He had three or four hundred dollars in cash with him.  We fear he was killed for his money. He had a check cashed in the Rochester bank Sept 27, hired a rig to go to his sisters at Akron, but did not call for the team, and has never been heard from since. His folks are greatly distressed about him.  He was unmarried … John E. Newhouse.
