Rev. J E Newhouse, well known throughout the Wabash valley being one of the pioneer Methodist ministers died at his home in Greencastle Monday afternoon, after an illness of but one week. Monday of last week he was stricken with apoplexy but rallied from the attack and was thought to be on the road to recovery. Friday he received the second stroke and grew worse until 4:30 o’clock Monday afternoon when he died.  John E. Newhouse was born in Ohio Feb 7, 1826 but most of his early boyhood was spent on a farm near Lake Maxinkuckee.  In 1856 he entered the ministry and for 36 years was a member of the Methodist conference, the latter years of his life being in the Northwest Indiana conference.  Several years ago he located at Greencastle to make his home, but still kept up his ministerial work. – kbz
