Charles, eldest son of Edward and Elizabeth Push Newgent, was born in Shelby County, Kentucky November 30, 1821; died March 3, 1909; aged 87 years, 3 months and 3 days. At the age of four years he, with his parents, removed to Putnam County, and since that time, he has lived continuously within one mile of the original homestead. On August 22. 1841, he was married to Miss Sarah White, of Parke County, and to this union three children were born: Albert, who died in 1872; Martha, who died in 1894, and Joseph E. who survives. His wife died August 21, 1866. On July 2, 1868, he married Miss Mary Baker and to them one child was born: Mary C., now Mrs. I. F. Wysong. He united with the Regular Predestinarian Baptist church more than a half century ago and always conducted himself as a true and devoted servant thereof.  Being deprived of a high education he used the tact of observing and was well versed on the current ways and doings of the world. In the world he was conservative and was never disturbed by the radical changes and customs, but always considered a matter thoroughly before using it.  Among his neighbors and friends he was charitable and the stranger was always treated with hospitality. To his family he was a kind husband and an indulgent father and all he could do to better their welfare was his pleasure.  he esteem in which he was held was shown in his last years, by the reverence shown him by his broad circle of friends, and all who knew him and he will be a man remembered, as useful as a citizen. true as a friend, and honored as a man. He was a man who did not approve of splendor and renown and preferred a place of service and humility to one of high education, but the life which he has lived is worth more as a testimony to bis courage, honor and integrity than the highest worldly position. And as his life is ended it will be said: β€œHe lived a life worth living.’’ He is survived by a wife, one son, one daughter and nine grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters and a large concourse of friends and relatives. Funeral services were held at the late residence. Elds. C. R. Collings and C. L. Airhart officiating, after which he was laid at rest in the Thomas Cemetery near Hollandsburg, Ind. - kbz
