NELSON, Newton Yates

Newton Y. Nelson, 94 years old, died at his home, 4260 Rookwood Avenue, Tuesday night after an illness of a month.  He was born in Putnam County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James I. Nelson who were pioneer settlers in that county. Mr. Nelson had voted Republican in the last 19 presidential elections, casting his first vote for Abraham Lincoln.  He was in the building and contracting business in central Illinois and lived in Chrisman of which he was one of the founders. Mr. Nelson was one of the first donors of old Asbury College, now Depauw. His wife, the former Rachel Tenbrook of Rockville died in 1927. Mr. Nelson retired soon after her death and came to Indianapolis. He was a member of the Methodist Church and sang in the choir in Chrisman many years. He also was a member of Bloomfield Lodge No 148 F&AM and had been a member of the Masonic Order since 1875. He also was a member of Modern Woodmen of America. Funeral services will be in Shirley Brothers central chapel at 10 o’clock this morning. Burial will be in Brick Chapel, five miles north of Greencastle. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Welding of Indianapolis and Mrs. Nora Wilson, Lake Charles, LA and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
