Louis E. 'Shacks' Nelson, 88, Greencastle, died Sunday at Putnam County Hospital.

Born May 3, 1911 in Putnam County, he was the son of David O. and Edna Pearl (Harlan) Nelson.

A U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a self-employed farmer, logger and trucker for many years until his retirement. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1592 in Greencastle.

He married Mary Eunice Sutherlin Jan. 28, 1933. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Norma Jean Bruner and husband Bob, Greencastle, and Charlene Clifford and husband Jack, Bainbridge; a son Darell 'Pete' Nelson and wife Marcia, Greencastle; two sisters, Dorothy Littrell and husband Luther, Greencastle, and Ruth Goodman, Greencastle; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Leroy Nelson; a granddaughter, Susan Clifford; and five brothers, Bill, Punk, John Ike, Zip and Buster Nelson.

Services will be at 1 p. m. Wednesday at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. William Staley officiating. Burial will be in Little Walnut Cemetery.

Visitation is set for 4-8 p. m. Tuesday. A Moose memorial service will be conducted at 7 p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  

Memorial contributions can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in care of Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home.
