James Frank (John Ike) Nelson, 82, Greencastle, died Friday morning at Heritage House Convalescent Center after an extended illness.

Born July 28, 1908, he was the son of David O. Nelson and Edna Pearl (Harlan) Nelson. Raised in Madison Township, Mr. Nelson worked as a logger with a team of horses during his teen years. He then worked for Barnaby's Saw Mill in Greencastle. Mr. Nelson was also a farmer and was employed as a carpenter for Metzger Lumber Co. in Greencastle until his retirement.  

He married Vertie Lea Cox on Oct. 23, 1930 and she preceeded him in death on Dec. 24, 1983. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Beech Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Bill (Francis) Scobee, Route 3, Greencastle; his brothers, Harold Nelson and Lewis Nelson, both of Greencastle; Harlan Nelson, Brazil and Francis (Buster) Nelson, Georgia; his sisters, Dorothy Littrell and Ruth Goodman, both of Greencastle; two grandchildren, Sharon K. Scobee, Greencastle and Steven M. Scobee and wife, Sherry, Route 3, Greencastle, two great-grandchildren, Stacey and Sean Scobee and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Morris Nelson and a son-in-law, Bill Scobee, on July 15, 1988.

Funeral services will be 2 p. m. Monday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Hoover and Rev. Albert Williams officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 2-8 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home.
