Marjorie Elizabeth McMurry, daughter
of John H. and Cyntha Rakes was born in Putnam County, Indiana on the 19th
day of May 1873 and departed this life the 12th of January 1972 at
her home in Corydon, Iowa, the last of a family of 9 children. She had lived
continuously in Wayne county except for the first two years of her life, having
came from her birthplace in Indiana with her parents in1 875. She is survived
by three sons: Earl Lemuel, Pearl Wayland and John Ardys; two grandchildren,
Dr. Earl William of Edmonton, Canada and Mrs. Martha Fry of Coralville, Iowa;
three daughters-in-law, Alice, Jamie and Mary; a grandson-in-law, Larry Keith
Fry; and a granddaughter-in-law, Enfys; and one great grandson, John Stewart
McMurry. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Arthur McMurry, in 1958
and an infant son, Ercole, five sisters and three brothers. She was united in marriage to John McMurry on
the 15th of March 1899 and to this union four sons were born. She
was a member of the old Union Church of South Fork, Township, which affiliation
she maintained throughout her life. She was interested in community activities
and enjoyed being the correspondent for a number of years of the Corydon
Times-Republican in the Union neighborhood.
She was a rural school teacher as a young woman and took great pleasure
in the teaching and educational activities of her family. She was a faithful
wife and loving mother and knew the pleasures and hardships of a rural
housewife of the early 1900s. She was
devoted and loyal to her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who
knew her. Funeral services were held at
2:00 p.m. Friday at the Wolf Funeral Home with Rev. Lawrence Jones of the
Corydon United Methodist Church conducting the services. Burial was in the Promise
City Cemetery with pallbearers; Jennings Green, Leland Green, Gary Green, Rex
McMurry, Bob McMurry and Clifford McMurry. - kbz
