Greencastle – The body of Sallie E. McGaughey will be entombed today in Forest Hill Abbey in this community where she spent many of her 108 years of life. Private services will be held for Mrs. McGaughey who was born Sept 2, 1877 in Putnam County during the presidential term of Rutheford B. Hayes. She died Friday in a Terre Haute Nursing home. She had lived in Terre Haute since 1955., She spent her early hears in Roachdale and married Charles E. McGaughey, Roachdale postmaster in 1902. The couple moved in 1918 to Greencastle where her husband’s career including being a lawyer, a one-term Republican Greencastle mayor in the 1920s and the president of a Greencastle Bank before his death in 1942. She is survived by a daughter, Helen McGaughe 82, Terre Haute, retired professor of English at Indiana State University. Miss McGaughey said her mother enjoyed an active life and remained alert into her 108th year. Her mother told her minister in July that “:I want to live to be 108 and then die,” Miss McGaughey said. Only a few Hoosiers have lived longer, surviving to the ages of 114, 111 and 109. Miss McGaughey, an only child, remembers her mother fondly as a hatmaker in her younger years. She said her parents were long remembered with affection by DePauw students who had stayed in their large home in Greencastle because the university at that time did not have adequate dorm space. Mrs. McGaughey was living in Westminster Village in Terre Haute at the time of her death. She died in the village’s Davis Gardens Health Care Center. She was a member of the Priscilla Club, a needle-point group, and Tri Psi, the mother’s club of Tri-Delta. She also was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ here.
