Capt. Allen P. McFarland, one of the officers killed Tuesday when the army dirigible Roma fell near Norfolk, VA was a nephew of William T. Fletcher, 1833 North Alabama Street, formerly postoffice inspector.  Capt. McFarland was a second cousin to Stoughton A. Fletcher, president of the Fletcher American National Bank and was related to other members of the Fletcher family in Indianapolis.  He was a great grandson of Calvin Fletcher and grandson of Miles Fletcher, who was a professor at Asbury Hall, now DePauw University at Greencastle.  Capt. McFarland lived in Indianapolis at the Stratford apartments, 520 N. Meridian St from the Spring of 1919 until the following spring when after the reorganization of the US Army Air service he was again commissioned a Capt.  He served throughout the war in the air service, spending much of the time in France.  His mother, Mary Fletcher McFarland, lived with him at Hampton Roads. His father died 7 years ago. Capt. McFarland was about 35 years old. While in Indianapolis he was connected with Bass, Knowlton & Co. architects. He had many friends and was an active church worker, being a lay reader in Christ Church.  Capt. McFarland was born and reared in Danville, Ill.  He was graduated in law from Chicago University and then studied and was graduated in architecture from Columbia.  He enlisted in the Air Service with Columbia University Air Squadron at the outbreak of war.  He had been stationed at Hampton Roads since he received his last commission.  He was capt of the 9th Balloon Company US Air Service.
