McCULLOUGH, James Vorhees - Putnam

James Vorhees McCullough and his wife, Mary Ellen "Ella" Rissler McCullough both were born and lived for a time in Putnam County. They moved perhaps in the late 1920's to Clay County.

Ella Rissler McCullough was a sister to Hattie Ann Rissler Johnson. Hattie & Ella were daughters of Hiram & Nancy Irwin Rissler of Putnam County. Hiram Rissler was the son of Susan Boone & Wm. E. Rissler. Susan Boone was the daughter of Moses Boone. Moses Boone was the son of Squire Boone, Jr. The Squire Boone, Jr. of the Squire Boone Caverns and the younger brother of the famous Daniel Boone.

Lived Only Few Hours After Release From Beneath

Overturned Car, Near Cory Wednesday.

BULLETIN: James V. McCullough died at 10:00 A.M. Thursday. Funeral arrangements were not completed at time of going to press. Funeral arrangements are not announced.

James (Vorhees) McCullough is at St. Anthony's hospital, Terre Haute, in a very critical condition from injuries received in an automobile collision Wednesday afternoon. Pinned beneath his car he received injuries about the head and chest and both legs were reported broken. Thursday morning the X-ray was being used in an endeavor to ascertain just how serious were his injuries.

The accident occurred about two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the junction of the Clay-Vigo County line road with St. Road 46, near Cory. Mr. McCullough had started for Terre Haute, driving west from his home. As he drove out from the country road on to the pavement, a car being driven by an employee of the state highway deptment crashed into and overturned Mr. McCullough's car, the other car and driver escaping injury.

Prominent Harrison Township Farmer Hurt in Wreck

Wednesday Afternoon, Fails to Survive.

James Vorhees McCullough, 72 years old, a prominent farmer of Harrison Township, died about ten o'clock yesterday morning in the St. Anthony's Hospital at Terre Haute from injuries received in an automobile accident shortly after 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. McCullough was injured when his car was struck by a machine driven by George Evelo, Democratic County Chairman of Vigo County on St. Highway 46, about 1/2 mile north of Cory at what is known as the Earl Fagg corner.

The injured man was rushed to the St. Anthony's hospital in the Fox ambulance of Terre Haute where he was found to be suffering with critical head wounds and both legs broken. He never regained consciousness.

James Vorhees McCullough was born in Putnam County and was the son of James and Mary Ann McCullough, pioneers of Putnam County. He married Mary Ellen Rissler, of Putnam County to which union was born four sons. Later the family moved to the farm southwest of Clay City where they resided for the past thirty years. Mr. McCullough gained much prominence as a farmer and a staunch Democratic party worker.

He is survived by the wife; four sons, Dan and Clem of Clay City, Reggie of Pleasant Gardens and Chauncey of Marion and two brothers John of Morgan's Crossing Road and Dave of Hadleytown.

The body was taken to the Schoppenhorst Funeral Home of Clay City to be prepared for burial after which it will be removed to the home southeast of Clay City. Funeral services will probably be held Sunday with interment at the Croy Creek Church cemetery.

Prominent Harrison Twp Farmer Died From Injuries Received in Auto Collision.

James Vorhees McCullough, aged 72, died at St. Anthony's hospital at 10 A.M. Thursday, June 27, from injuries received the previous afternoon when his automobile collided with another machine near Cory.

Deceased had lived in Harrison township for more than twenty years, a prosperous, influential citizen.

Funeral services were held Sunday; short services at the home at 12:30 o'clock and service at Croy Creek New Light Church, near the Clay and Putnam County line. The Rev. McCammack, pastor of Good Hope Baptist Church conducted the funeral rites and burial was made in the Croy Creek Cemetery. The following obituary was read:

James Vorhees McCullough, son of James and Mary Ann (Mace) McCullough, was born in Washington Township, Putnam County, Ind., Dec. 8, 1862, and departed this life June 27, 1935, aged 72 years, 6 months and 19 days.

On Jan. 1, 1885 he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Rissler. To this union were born five sons and one daughter, one son and the daughter having preceded him in death.

About the year 1890 he confessed his faith in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and united with the New Light Church of Croy's Creek.

He is survived by the widow, Mary Ellen; four sons, James Daniel and Clem of Clay City; Chancy, of Marion and Reggie of Pleasant Gardens. Two brothers, John and David, of Brazil; seven grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces, and a host of friends and relatives.
