Roxanna Miles, 100, Greencastle, died Wednesday at Heritage House Convalescent Center. She was born Jan. 4, 1889, in Greencastle, the daughter of John Henry and Florene Smith. She attended Greencastle High School and was graduated in 1907. For more than 35 years she was a cook at Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, the Needlework Club, a life member of the NAACP, and Queen Esther Chapter 5 of the Order of Eastern Star in Terre Haute. At an early age she joined the Bethel AME Church and was active there for many years. She was a missionary worker in the church and held several offices until 1980 when the church was sold. She is survived by three nieces, Francis Miles, Greencastle, Elizabeth Ewing, Indianapolis, and Ruth Gibson, South Bend; two nephews, James A. Miles and C. Francis Nichols; two great nephews, Charles Miles and Joseph Miles, both of Greencastle; several great grand nieces and several great grand nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and a sister. Services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle with the Rev. James C. Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling is schedule 4-8 p.m. Thursday with an Eastern Star service set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday. - kbz

Roxanna Henry was born in Greencastle Jan 4, 1889 to John Henry and Florence Smith. She finished high school. She married ___ Miles but was divorced. She worked for many years as a cook in one of DePauw’s sororities. She passed away 9 months after her 100th birthday. She lived at the Heritage Convalescent Center at her death. Surprisingly with diabetes when not as much was known that she lived so long when she passed away of a cerebral hemorrhage. Loved to have known this gal.

The third annual Miles reunion was held at Robe Ann Park, Sunday, July 28, with 36 members present.
Those attending were Floyd Jr. and Kitty Miles, Dana, Robbin, Lesly and Quenton; Bud Forepaugh, Kathy and Heddy; Gene Miles, Henry Miles, Mrs. Ted Miles, Charles, Ann and Priscilla; Frankie Miles, Ed and Marcia Bryant, and Buster; Tom and Hazel Barnett and Tommy; Russell and Joan Freeland, Roxanna Clinton Falls Ladies Miles, Joe and Sharon Taylor, Aid Meets at Church Andrea, Cheryl and Terry Martha The Clinton Falls Ladies Aid McIntyre. Helen Copeland, Billy met at the church on Thursday Miles, Jim and Frances Miles. Visitors included: Rev. H. E. Edmonds, Mark Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Vemiss Sweatt, Mrs. Pat Buckner, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Buckner, Mr. and Mrs. Derwood Abernathy, Mrs. Mary Woods, Mr. and Mrs. Charles David, Mrs. Agnes Richard, Lloyd Robbs, Mrs. Virdie Shelton, Mrs. Martha Woods, Tom Carter, Mildred Jones and Natalie, Weltha Bird and laVerne Williams. Dinner was served at 1:30 with Rev. H. E. Edmonds, Pastor of Bethel A. M. E. Church, offering grace. The business session was held after dinner at which time election of officers took place. The following members were elected and installed by Rev. Edmonds. President : Joan Freeland, Plainfield, Ind; V Pres – Jim Miles, Chicago; Sec – Maria Bryant, Indianapolis; Asst Sec Ann Miles, Greencastle; Treas – Frances Miles, Greencastle. The history of the Miles family prepared by Roxanna Miles was read by the secretary. Roxanna Miles was appointed Historian. Pictures were taken by the photographer and the remainder of the afternoon was spent in visiting and renewing old acquaintances. The group adjourned to meet next year at the same place. An enjoyable time was reported by all.
