Our citizens, especially the very many friends of Mrs. Henry Meltzer, were shocked on Monday morning when the telegraph announced that she had died about 12 o'clock on Sunday night, of pneumonia, at the residence of her sister, Mrs. W.E. Stevenson at Indianapolis. Mrs. Meltzer was called to Cincinnati some 10 days before by -- the sickness of her aunt. On her return trip she stopped off at Indianapolis to visit her sister, and was taken sick there. Mr. Meltzer was summoned from this city to her bedside and it was thought she was getting along as well as could be expected until Sunday evening when she grew rapidly worse. A telegram was sent telling the children - Misses Tillie, Clara, Fred and Harry - of the critical condition of their mother, and they left for Indianapolis on the next train, but the loved and revered mother had "crossed to the golden shore" ere they arrived. The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place from the family residence Wednesday afternoon, Dr. SB Town conducting the services. From other points there were in attendance at the funeral Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wirth and Miss Kate Meltzer of Cincinnati, Miss SInger, W. E. Stevenson and wife and Mrs. Dave Stevenson of Indianapolis. The deceased was a most lovable and estimable woman - beautiful, intelligent, refined, kind of heart, pure in spirit, cheerful; the light, the joy and the comfort of the household; respected and honored by all who knew her because of her gentleness and worth - the loss to the bereaved husband and children is beyond the power of words to convey; may they find comfort and consolation in the certainty of a reunion beyond the confines of time.
The City Council adopted the following resolution, on motion of Mr. Miller at the regular meeting on Tuesday night. Whereas our esteemed fellow citizen an ex-member of the city council, Henry Meltzer, has been visited with deep affliction in the death of his wife, be it resolved that we as an expression of our esteem hereby tender to him our heartfelt sympathy and condolence in this the hour of his great bereavement. Resolved that these resolutions be spread of record and that the city clerk be directed to convey a certified copy hereof to Mr. Meltzer. -- kbz
