Dr. William L. Mahan died at his home in Terre Haute Thursday afternoon after an illness of five weeks with asthma, aged about 59 years. The deceased was born in Mason County, Kentucky and came to Greencastle with his father, Squire Isaac Mahan about the year 1846. It was here that he began the practice of medicine which he pursued very successfully both here and at Bowling Green. Near 30 years ago he removed to Terre Haute where he constantly had a large and lucrative practice. He leaves a wife and five children, the latter all grown. On Friday the physicians of Terre Haute held a meeting at which remarks of a highly complimentary character were made by the leading practitioners of the city. A committee was appointed consisting of Drs. Read, Swafford, Long, Young and Thompson to draft resolutions expressive of the sentiments of the meeting. The committee reported the following resolutions which were adopted. Resolved in view of the dispensation of providence in the death of Dr. Wm. L. Mahan, long a prominent and useful physician of this city. Be it resolved that in this we recognize a public and professional loss; the uncertainty of life; the certainty of death and the need of diligence in the hours of health and the strength of manhood to enlarge and extend our usefulness. Resolved that we will signify our consideration for the deceased by attending his funeral in a body. Resolved that we extend to the family of Dr. Mahan our condolence and heartfelt sympathy in their irreparable loss and great affliction also a request that the city press publish the same, also the Indiana Medical Journal. A motion was adopted that Drs. Gerstmeyer, Roberts, Stevenson, Thompson, Young, Mitchell and Armstrong act as pall bearers. – kbz
